Nevada Gold Mines: Gold is arguably the most precious rare metal on Earth, its value can be gauged from the fact that the borrowing power of a nation is determined by the size of its gold reserves, which serves as a collateral in a country’s borrowings.

A whopping 131.4 million ounces of gold was produced globally in 2024, a 2.2% increase from 2023, with China retaining its top spot as the world’s largest gold producer, followed by Australia and Russia.

But did you know that the largest gold mine on Earth is not located in the top 3 gold producing countries, but in Nevada, United States– the world’s 5th largest gold producer.

World’s largest gold mine

The Nevada Gold Mines, a network of gold mines in Elko, Nevada, is regarded as the world’s largest gold mine, yielding a staggering 9420 crore kilos of gold annually.

Established as a joint venture between Barrick Gold and Newmont on July 1, 2019, the Nevada Gold Mines includes 10 underground mine sand 12 surface mines as well as related facilities across northern Nevada.

Barrick Gold, which owns a 61.5% stake in the venture, and Newmont, which has 38.5% ownership, combined their significant gold mining assets in the region to form the Nevada Gold Mines, which is currently the largest gold mining operation in the world

Barrick Gold operates the Nevada Gold Mines, which includes several gold mining operations, including Carlin, Cortez Gold Mine, Goldstrike mine, Long Canyon, Phoenix, Turquoise Ridge, and Twin Creeks Mine.

China discovers world’s largest gold reserve

In related news, China recently discovered the world’s largest gold reserve in Hunan province, a remarkable fid that led to a surge in gold prices globally.

According to Chinese state media, approximately 1,000 metric tons of high-quality ore, worth a whopping $83 billion have been found in Pingjiang County in Hunan province, making it the largest gold reserve ever discovered in recorded history, surpassing the previous record of 900 metric tons, held by the South Deep mine in South Africa.
