Over a week after the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla held a significant review meeting on Friday with top officials to expedite the operations of vital state government departments.
A senior official stated that the Governor reviewed the overall budgetary allocations and technical aspects of rehabilitating displaced persons affected by ethnic violence and residing in various relief camps across the state. More than 50,000 individuals, including men, women, and children, have been staying in approximately 250 relief camps in multiple districts since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023.
During the meeting, Governor Bhalla examined the budgetary allocations of various crucial departments directly associated with the welfare of violence-impacted people. He also inquired about arrangements for imparting skill development training and explored the feasibility of employment opportunities in the private sector for the displaced persons. The Governor directed officials to implement “Hunar Se Rojgar,” a Government of India initiative under the Ministry of Tourism, aimed at youth skill development, especially for the displaced individuals.
Following the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur on February 13, Friday’s review meeting chaired by the Governor held particular significance, according to an official.
Key officials present at the meeting included Chief Secretary P.K. Singh, Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, Secretary (Health) Sumant Singh, Commissioner (Education-School) Gyan Prakash, Joint Secretary Mercina R. Panmei, and other senior officers from various departments. Former Union Home Secretary Bhalla, who assumed the charge of Manipur Governor on January 3, has been holding crucial meetings almost daily with senior officials from both state and central governments.
