Manipur MP Sanajaoba Urges Governor to Probe ‘Humiliating’ Treatment of Journalists

Rajya Sabha MP Sanajaoba Leishemba has urged Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to launch an investigation into the alleged harassment of journalists en route to Ukhrul, calling the incident “unheard of” and a direct assault on press freedom.

Incident at Gwaltabi Checkpoint

On May 20, 2025, a team of journalists traveling in a Manipur State Transport (MST) bus to cover the Shirui Lily Festival was stopped at the Gwaltabi checkpoint by security personnel, reportedly from the Mahar Regiment. The journalists were allegedly ordered to conceal the words “Manipur State Transport” displayed on their vehicle, prompting them to abandon their assignment and return to Imphal.

Sanajaoba’s Letter to the Governor

In a letter dated May 24, Sanajaoba expressed “great anguish” over the incident, questioning whether the security personnel acted independently or under administrative instructions. He warned that failure to investigate would undermine public confidence in the government and reduce it to a “lame duck administration”.

Press Freedom Concerns and Media Protest

The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) and All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) condemned the incident, calling it a violation of democratic principles. In response, Manipur’s media houses observed a “Pen-Down Strike” on May 21, suspending publications and demanding strict action against those responsible.

Governor’s Response and Inquiry Committee

Following widespread outrage, the Manipur government announced an inquiry committee to investigate the matter. The Governor’s office is expected to issue a statement addressing concerns raised by journalists and political leaders.
