In a significant crackdown on illegal arms trafficking, Manipur Police have dismantled an inter-state arms smuggling syndicate, arresting four individuals and seizing a large cache of sophisticated firearms and ammunition. The operation, conducted in the Greater Imphal area on June 24, is part of an intensified campaign to neutralize insurgent and criminal networks operating across state lines.
High-End Weapons Recovered
According to senior police officials, the arrested individuals were found in possession of an arsenal that included:
- Smith & Wesson, Sig Sauer, Glock, JD Taurus, and Beretta pistols
- Over 150 rounds of live ammunition
- Multiple loaded magazines and wireless communication sets
One of the accused is reportedly a known cadre of the banned outfit United National Liberation Front (Pambei faction).
Linked to Extortion and Insurgency
In a parallel operation, three more active UNLF (Pambei) members were arrested from Babupara in Imphal West for allegedly extorting money from government employees and contractors. Another suspect from the UNLF (Ningolmacha faction) was apprehended in Thoubal district for similar extortion activities.
Police Vow Continued Crackdown
Manipur Police have confirmed that all arrested individuals will be produced before the relevant courts. Investigations are ongoing to trace further links to arms trafficking and insurgent financing. A senior officer stated, “We are tracking all elements involved in subversive activities and will continue our crackdown on groups trying to destabilize the region.”
