Manu Bhakar’s adorable mistake brings smile at Khel Ratna Awards

Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award is the most coveted sporting honor India offers. Annually, it is given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Named after one of the great Indian hockey players, Major Dhyan Chand, this award identifies sports persons who have achieved excellent performances in their fields. Established in 1991-1992, this award is presented to those people who have always been distinguished with high skills, commitment, and achievement in the specific sport which they perform.

India’s top four athletes were honoured with this prestigious award by President Draupadi Murmu at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Friday. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh, Paralympic gold medallist high jumper Praveen Kumar, World Chess Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, and double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker.

Manu Bhaker created history by becoming the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal at the Paris Olympics. She won a bronze medal in individual competition for the women’s 10m air pistol and then achieved another bronze, this time in the mixed team competition with Sarabjot Singh. In this fairy tale performance, she became the first Indian athlete to win two medals at the same Olympic Games.

The award ceremony, however, was not without its moments of light-heartedness. The announcement of Manu Bhaker’s achievements did have one funny moment. When the announcer had barely just begun, Manu in a split of a second unintentionally crossed the border leaving a small gap before she could proceed to receive her prize from the president. But despite that minute gaff, Manu accepted the honour with grace and a wry smile and added warmth to this formal event.

Manu Bhaker’s reaction to the Khel Ratna Award

Manu Bhaker, two-time Olympic medal-winning shooter, expressed her views after the ceremony regarding the Khel Ratna Award. Talking to ANI, Manu said she was grateful for the honor and explained its significance.. “It is an honour to receive the Khel Ratna. It is one of the biggest honours in the country. This will inspire me to work harder in the future and win more medals for the country,” she said.

“I have been training for the last two and a half months regularly. Competitions are coming end of this month and next month,” she added further.

The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award is one of India’s highest sporting honours, recognizing athletes who have demonstrated exceptional performance and brought pride to the nation. The recognition of Harmanpreet Singh, Praveen Kumar, Gukesh Dommaraju, and Manu Bhaker underscores their contributions to their respective sports and their role in inspiring future generations of athletes.

As these athletes continue to strive for excellence, their achievements serve as a testament to the hard work, determination, and passion that drive them. The award ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan was not just a celebration of individual accomplishments, but also a tribute to the spirit of sportsmanship and the enduring pursuit of greatness in Indian sports.
