MCA Enforces Mandatory Participation Rule for Mumbai Players in T20 League; Rohit Sharma Named Face of the League

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has issued a directive mandating all Mumbai-based Indian cricketers to participate in the upcoming T20 Mumbai League, scheduled to commence immediately after the conclusion of IPL 2025. This decision aims to bolster the league’s profile and ensure the involvement of top-tier talent.

Prominent players such as Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Ajinkya Rahane, Prithvi Shaw, and Shardul Thakur have been informed of the rule. Exceptions will be made for players selected for India’s Test tour of England or those dealing with injuries or personal commitments. The league, set to run from May 26 to June 5, will feature eight teams, with two new franchises added this season.

To incentivize participation, the MCA has announced a ₹15 lakh appearance fee for Indian players, in addition to their auction earnings. Over 2,800 local cricketers have registered for the league, highlighting its growing popularity and significance in nurturing Mumbai’s cricketing talent.

In a strategic move, the MCA has named India’s ODI and Test captain, Rohit Sharma, as the “Face of the League.” This decision underscores Sharma’s stature in Indian cricket and his connection to Mumbai’s cricketing heritage. However, questions remain about his role in the Test squad following India’s disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign earlier this year.

The MCA’s initiative reflects its commitment to promoting domestic cricket and providing a platform for emerging players while ensuring the participation of seasoned professionals. The league’s success is expected to further strengthen Mumbai’s reputation as a cricketing powerhouse.
