Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new Netflix series, POLO, has not been well-received by critics and royal watchers. The show, which revolves around the sport of polo, has struggled to connect with audiences, with many labeling it as boring and not relatable.
“Polo is a sport enjoyed mostly by the wealthy,” said royal expert Phil Dampier. “It’s not something the average person can connect with. It’s all about expensive horses, fancy equipment, and a social scene that doesn’t appeal to most people. Watching it is pretty boring.”
Harry, who grew up playing polo with his family, hoped to show the emotional side of the sport, sharing what drives elite players. However, according to Dampier, the show does not live up to expectations. “People in the sport enjoy it, but as a spectator sport, it’s not exciting. Most of the appeal is the social scene, not the action on the field.”
The series only features brief appearances from Harry and Meghan, which has disappointed many. “The couple barely appears in the episodes,” Dampier noted. “For the amount of money Netflix paid them—reportedly between $80 to $100 million—that’s a big issue.” Many viewers were also critical of the lack of mention of Prince William, Harry’s brother, who also enjoys playing polo. This led some to speculate that William’s absence was due to the ongoing feud between the brothers.
When the trailer for POLO was first released, it received harsh reactions. “It’s tacky and cringey,” one source said. “It shows the worst side of polo and isn’t interesting to watch.” Even though polo has become more inclusive in recent years, with players from various backgrounds, the show doesn’t seem to capture that aspect, leaving many feeling disconnected.
Despite all the negative feedback, Harry defended the series, saying, “This show gives a rare behind-the-scenes look at the passion and determination of the world’s top polo players, showing the true grit and intensity behind the glamor.” However, for many, the show just didn’t deliver.
