In a diplomatic twist ahead of the upcoming BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Chinese President Xi Jinping is reportedly considering skipping the event, with speculation linking his potential absence to a state dinner being hosted in honor of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Xi Jinping May Sit Out BRICS 2025
According to reports from the South China Morning Post, Premier Li Qiang is expected to lead the Chinese delegation in Xi’s place, citing “scheduling issues” as the official reason. However, insiders suggest that Beijing may be uneasy about the optics of Modi receiving special attention, including a state dinner, which could portray Xi as a “supporting actor” on the global stage.
Diplomatic Undercurrents and Missed Expectations
Brazilian officials have expressed disappointment, noting that Lula had visited Beijing in May as a goodwill gesture, hoping Xi would reciprocate by attending the summit. “BRICS without China is not BRICS,” said Lula’s special adviser Celso Amorim, emphasizing the importance of Xi’s presence amid global instability.
Modi’s Visit and Strategic Talks
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to attend the BRICS Summit on July 6–7, followed by a state visit beginning July 8. Key agenda items include climate change, green financing, and enhanced defense and trade cooperation between India and Brazil.
China’s Official Stance
Despite the speculation, China’s foreign ministry has reiterated its support for Brazil’s BRICS presidency and emphasized the bloc’s role in promoting global peace and development. “In a volatile and turbulent world, BRICS nations maintain their strategic resolve,” said spokesperson Guo Jiakun.
