MS Dhoni’s IPL Future Uncertain as CSK Awaits His Decision

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) assistant coach Sridharan Sriram has revealed that the franchise remains uncertain about MS Dhoni’s future in the IPL, as the legendary cricketer has yet to make a decision regarding his retirement or continuation.

Dhoni’s Future Remains a Mystery

Ahead of CSK’s final league match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, Sriram stated that Dhoni has not communicated any plans for IPL 2026.

“Not as much as I know. Really don’t know what is going to happen,” Sriram admitted during a pre-match press conference.

Dhoni himself has addressed the speculation, stating that he will take the next eight months to assess his physical condition and readiness before making a final call.

CSK’s Struggles and Dhoni’s Role

CSK has endured a challenging IPL 2025 season, finishing at the bottom of the points table for the first time in franchise history. Despite Dhoni’s continued leadership, his batting form has declined, with 196 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 135, a significant drop from his 220 strike rate in IPL 2024.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged that the team is undergoing a rebuilding phase, integrating young talents like Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, and Urvil Patel while still valuing Dhoni’s experience and leadership.

Will Dhoni Return for IPL 2026?

While Dhoni has not ruled out a return, experts believe that his troublesome knee and declining batting impact could influence his decision. Fleming emphasized that CSK will continue to rely on experienced players, but the franchise is also preparing for a post-Dhoni era.
