Nails Can Indicate Cholesterol Levels: Here’s How to Tell

The human body contains two types of cholesterol: HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol). While LDL is harmful, HDL is beneficial for the body.

Often, we remain unaware of rising cholesterol levels in our bodies. This makes it crucial to monitor cholesterol levels effectively. Without blood tests, it can be challenging to understand whether cholesterol is elevated.

However, doctors suggest that certain signs can indicate whether cholesterol is accumulating in the body, particularly visible through the toenails.

Signs That Cholesterol Levels May Be High:
1. Yellowing of Toenails: If the color of your toenails starts to turn yellow, it may be a warning sign. Elevated bad cholesterol can accumulate beneath the skin, affecting the nails.
2. Bloodlessness: If your nails appear pale, it could indicate that bad cholesterol levels have risen, narrowing the blood vessels and impeding blood flow.
3. Poor Nail Quality Despite Care: If regular pedicures fail to improve the condition of your toenails, this could signal increasing cholesterol levels. Nails may become thinner or thicker, and their shape may become distorted.
4. Stunted Nail Growth: Research has shown that when bad cholesterol levels rise, nails may stop growing normally. Pay attention to whether your nail length is developing as it should.
5. Black Coating Under the Nails: A dark coating under the nails can occur when bad cholesterol levels rise. Poor blood circulation throughout the body can lead to blood clots forming.

Monitoring these signs can help you take proactive steps towards maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.
