Former England captain Nasser Hussain has cautioned the national team against rushing Jofra Archer into the playing XI for the second Test against India, calling the move a “gamble” given the pacer’s recent injury history and limited red-ball match fitness.
Archer, who last played a Test in 2021, was named in England’s squad for the Edgbaston Test starting July 2, marking a potential comeback after four years. He recently bowled 18 overs for Sussex in a County Championship match—his only first-class appearance since 2021.
🏏 Hussain’s Take: “Too Much of a Risk This Week”
Speaking to Sky Sports, Hussain said:
“I do think it is a gamble worth taking, I just don’t know if it’s worth taking this week. I would do it a week after at Lord’s. He’s only just made his first-class comeback… When Archer’s fully fit, he is one of the best in the world. But unfortunately, he hasn’t been fully fit for a very long time”.
He emphasized that while Archer’s return is a boost for England, playing him too soon could backfire, especially with the Ashes and future tours in mind.
🔄 Selection Dilemma: Who Makes Way?
Hussain also raised concerns about team balance, questioning who would be dropped to accommodate Archer. England’s pace attack, including Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, and Josh Tongue, performed well in the first Test, making selection decisions even more complex.
🧠 Strategic Patience Urged
“What is the hurry when we’ve waited so long? Why not wait another week just to make sure?” Hussain asked, suggesting that England could ease Archer back into red-ball cricket rather than risk a premature return.
