Unlike assembly elections in other parts of India, the polls in Christian-dominated Mizoram are notably tranquil. The primary goal of the civil societies is to maintain zero tolerance for unethical practices during the polls.
The Mizoram People’s Forum (MPF), an independent church-led voluntary election watchdog, and its key constituent Young Mizo Association (YMA), has played a pivotal role since 2006 to ensure that elections in Mizoram are free and transparent without any undue influence of money, power and misconduct.
Following a tumultuous election in 2006, the MPF was established to prevent unethical practices during elections. It was founded on June 21, 2006, with the collaboration of seven churches and five NGOs, forming a forum dedicated to eradicating unethical election practices.
“We formed in 2006, with seven churches and five NGOs coming together. Our main goal is to ensure that elections are conducted freely and fairly. The Election Commission of India has also commended our efforts,” said MPF General Secretary Rev Lalramliana Pachuau.
An MOU was signed between this voluntary organisation and the five major political parties in the state: Mizo National Front (MNF), Congress, Zoram People’s Movement, Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC) to curb inducements, whether in cash or kind, to voters.
“MPF has consistently urged political parties to maintain transparency and fairness during election campaigns. We have encouraged parties not to conduct home campaigning or door-to-door campaigns, as it could lead to malpractice where cash can be given to induce voters. Hence, we organise the common platforms where all candidates come and speak their minds,” Rev. Pachuau explained.
The MPF and the political parties signed an agreement to promote free and fair elections in the upcoming state Assembly elections, aiming for good governance in Mizoram. Both parties have called on the people to endorse the agreement and work toward its success.
Elections for the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly will be held on November 7.
