Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has voiced strong criticism over the exclusion of Sarfaraz Khan from India’s Test squad for the upcoming England series, calling it “not a good story” and questioning the selectors’ inconsistent approach.
Sarfaraz Khan’s Omission Sparks Debate
Despite a promising start to his international career—including a 150-run knock against New Zealand and a blazing 76-ball century in a warm-up game against the senior Indian team—Sarfaraz was left out of the 18-member squad for the five-match Test series in England.
“Sarfaraz Khan hasn’t done anything wrong thus far. He scored 90-plus in the one match he played. After that, you didn’t play him again, and now he’s not part of the Test team,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Selectors’ Mixed Signals Questioned
Chopra criticized the decision to include Sarfaraz in the India A squad while denying him a spot in the main team, stating that if the selectors lack confidence in his technique, they should not have sent him to England at all.
“He hasn’t failed in England, Australia, or South Africa—because he hasn’t been given a chance. If you don’t trust him, don’t send him with India A either,” Chopra added.
Selectors Back Karun Nair, Sai Sudharsan
Sarfaraz’s omission made way for the return of Karun Nair and the inclusion of Sai Sudharsan, both of whom had strong domestic seasons. However, Chopra argued that Sarfaraz’s consistent performances deserved more recognition.
What Lies Ahead
With the England series starting June 20, Sarfaraz’s absence has reignited discussions about selection transparency and the treatment of domestic performers. Fans and experts alike are calling for greater clarity and fairness in team selection.
