Not Rohit Sharma Or Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly Calls This Batter As India’s Greatest Opener After Sunil Gavaskar

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly have been among the greatest cricketing minds around. Recently, he praised ex-opener Virender Sehwag calling him the greatest India opener after the legendary Sunil Gavaskar.

Sehwag, who played for India from 1999 to 2013, was one of the most fearless batters the world of cricket ever witnessed. He played 104 Tests and 251 ODIs, scoring 8586 and 8273, runs respectively. In 19 T20Is, Sehwag scored 394 runs. He was part of the Indian team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 Cricket World Cup.

Ganguly made the statement in the trailer of “The Greatest Rivalry – India vs Pakistan”, a documentary series on the cricketing rivalry between India and Pakistan. The documentary is set to premiere on Netflix on February 7.

“After (Sunil) Gavaskar, the greatest opener is Virender Sehwag,” said Ganguly.

Sehwag, fondly known as the ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’, remains one of the most destructive batters in cricket history. With his fearless stroke play and attacking mindset, he dominated bowlers across formats, amassing over 16,000 international runs for India.

Sehwag made his ODI debut in 1999 against arch-rivals Pakistan and played his first Test match in 2001 against South Africa. His aggressive batting style set him apart, making him a nightmare for bowlers.

Sehwag is the only Indian batter to score two triple centuries in Tests. One of only four players worldwide to achieve this feat, alongside Don Bradman, Chris Gayle, and Brian Lara. He is also a veteran of 23 Test centuries and 32 half-centuries. The destructive opener won the ICC Test Player of the Year award in 2010, scoring 1,282 runs in 10 matches, including six centuries

Scored a monumental 219 runs against West Indies in 2011, becoming one of the few batters to hit a double century in ODIs.

Sehwag’s fearless batting approach redefined Indian cricket’s mindset, especially in Test matches, where he played with a strike rate unheard of in the longest format. His ability to dominate world-class bowlers made him one of India’s most cherished cricketers.
