Operation Sindhu: First Flight Carrying 110 Indian Students Evacuated from Iran Lands Safely in Delhi

In a major relief for families across India, the first evacuation flight under Operation Sindhu—India’s mission to rescue nationals from war-hit Iran—landed safely in Delhi early Thursday morning, carrying 110 Indian students, most of whom were studying medicine in Tehran and other cities.

✈️ Evacuation via Armenia Amid Escalating Iran-Israel Conflict

As tensions between Iran and Israel escalated following recent missile exchanges, the Indian government swiftly moved to evacuate its citizens. The students were first relocated to Armenia via land routes, coordinated by the Indian Embassy in Tehran, before boarding a special flight from Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport on June 18.

🗣️ Students Recount Harrowing Experience

Several students described the situation in Iran as “terrifying,” with missiles and drones visible in the skies.

“Our neighborhood was bombed. We were very afraid. I hope we never see those days again,” said Mir Khalif, an MBBS student from Kashmir.

Another student, Ali Akbar, recalled witnessing a missile fall while traveling by bus toward Armenia.

“The situation shown in the news is absolutely true. Tehran has been devastated,” he said.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families Express Gratitude, Urge Further Action

Parents waiting at the airport expressed both relief and concern.

“We are thankful to the Indian government, but we urge them to bring back the remaining students still stranded in Tehran,” said Haider Ali, father of a 21-year-old MBBS student.

🛡️ Government’s Response and Next Steps

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh confirmed that more evacuation flights are planned.

“We have planes ready. Our missions are operating 24/7. As the situation evolves, we will continue to bring our people home,” he stated.

The Ministry of External Affairs has advised Indian nationals still in Iran to remain in contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran and the 24×7 MEA Control Room in New Delhi.

Stay tuned for updates on further evacuation efforts.
