Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a strong response to recent remarks made by Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus regarding India’s Northeastern region. Yunus, during his visit to China, referred to the Northeast as “landlocked” and positioned Bangladesh as the “guardian of ocean access” for the region. These comments have sparked widespread criticism in India, particularly among leaders from the Northeast.
In a meeting with Yunus on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, PM Modi emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive and constructive relationship between India and Bangladesh. He urged Yunus to avoid rhetoric that could strain bilateral ties, stating, “Any rhetoric that vitiates the environment is best avoided.” Modi also reiterated India’s commitment to fostering a democratic, stable, and inclusive Bangladesh while addressing concerns over the safety of minorities in the neighboring country.
The remarks by Yunus have been described as “offensive” by Indian leaders, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who highlighted the strategic importance of the Northeast and called for enhanced infrastructure to strengthen connectivity with the rest of India. The controversy has added a new layer of complexity to India-Bangladesh relations, which have already been under strain due to geopolitical shifts and growing ties between Dhaka and Beijing.
As the diplomatic dialogue continues, PM Modi’s firm stance underscores India’s focus on safeguarding its territorial integrity and fostering regional stability. The Northeast remains a critical area of strategic importance, and India’s leadership is keen on ensuring its development and integration with the rest of the country.
