Pro-Monarchy Protests Erupt in Nepal Amid Political Turmoil

Nepal is witnessing a wave of pro-monarchy demonstrations as supporters of former King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev demand the restoration of the monarchy. Disillusioned with the current government led by Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, protestors have organized rallies and marches across the country, reigniting debates about Nepal’s political future.

Protests Gain Momentum

The demonstrations, including motorbike rallies and public gatherings, have drawn significant attention. Protestors chanted slogans like “Narayanhitki Khai gara, hamra raja aaudai chhan” (vacate the Royal Palace, we are bringing our king back) as they marched from Babar Mahal to the former Royal Palace on Durbar Marg. The movement reflects growing dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of economic and infrastructural issues.

Former King Gyanendra, who abdicated the throne in 2008 when Nepal became a republic, has also made public appearances, urging unity and progress. During a pilgrimage on Democracy Day, he emphasized that his abdication was a step toward peace, not a sign of weakness.

Government’s Stance

Prime Minister Oli has dismissed the possibility of reinstating the monarchy, advising the former king to form a political party and contest elections if he believes in his popularity. “Some people are shouting slogans to reinstate monarchy these days, which is not possible,” Oli stated during a public event. Other political leaders, including former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ have echoed similar sentiments, ruling out the return of the monarchy.

Historical Context

Nepal transitioned to a federal democratic republic in 2008 following a decade-long Maoist insurgency. The monarchy was officially abolished, and the country has since experienced political instability, with frequent changes in leadership. The current protests highlight lingering nostalgia for the monarchy among certain sections of the population.

Geopolitical Implications

The Oli government has faced criticism for its pro-China stance, including signing agreements under the Belt and Road Initiative and updating Nepal’s map to include disputed territories with India. These moves have strained Nepal’s traditional ties with India and added to the political discontent.

As Nepal grapples with these challenges, the pro-monarchy protests serve as a reminder of the country’s complex political history and the ongoing struggle to balance tradition and modern governance.
