India’s Shreyas Iyer opened up on his recovery from injury and admitted that he did feel lonely at the point in time after his hundred against Australia on Sunday.
On September 24, 2023, Iyer marked his comeback with a spectacular performance against Australia in the second ODI match held in Indore, India. He scored his first ODI hundred since his return from injury, contributing significantly to India’s total score of 399. Iyer’s individual score was 105 runs off 90 balls, a feat that included 11 fours and three sixes. His partnership with fellow batter Shubman Gill was particularly noteworthy, with the duo adding 200 runs for the second wicket stand. Gill also scored a century, contributing 104 runs to the team’s total.
His journey back to the pitch was not easy, having undergone successful back surgery in London and spending six months out of action. His return to the team in the Asia Cup was also disrupted after he suffered back spasms ahead of the Super 4s clash against Pakistan and was forced to miss the game. He would subsequently miss the rest of the matches for the side in the tournament.
Speaking about his recovery from injury at the post-match press conference, Shreyas said that it was a rollercoaster ride and claimed that he would thank himself for believing in his abilities. The Indian batter said that he did feel lonely at that point in time and thanked his family, trainers and physios for keeping his spirits high.
“Yeah, it was definitely a rollercoaster ride. I would like to thank myself, to be honest. For believing, at that point in time, on my abilities and also my mindset. I was feeling a bit lonely at that point of time, but thanks to my physios, my trainers and my family, to back me at that point of time, and I’m grateful to have them around. These are all these people being around me and lifting my spirits high. That motivated me to stay positive and optimistic at the same time. So I’m thankful, and I’m grateful,” said Iyer.
