‘Some Made It A Fashion…’: PM Modi Shreds Opposition Amid Caste Census Demand

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday took a pot shot at opposition over their consistent demand on conducting nationwide “caste-census” saying that “some people have made it a fashion to talk about castes.”

While replying to the debate on the motion of thanks on the President’s address in Lok Sabha, PM Modi took a jibe at Congress’ previous governments saying that for the past three decades, the OBC MPs were demanding Constitutional status for OBC Commission.

He further emphasised that it was the Modi government who granted Constitutional status to the OBC Commission.

“For some people, speaking about caste is fashion. For the last 30 years, OBC MPs have been demanding that OBC Commission be granted Constitutional status. Those who see a benefit in casteism today did not think of the OBC community back then. We granted Constitutional status to the OBC Commission,” he said.

The Prime Minister further said that the BJP-led government ensured that the backward classes get more opportunities in every sector.

“Our Government has worked to create maximum opportunities for people from SC, ST and OBC Communities. Our commitment to the Constitution motivates us to make strong and pro-people decisions…” he said.

He later took a dig at the Congress saying that “there is a vast difference between their words and actions…”

“I pose an important question to the citizens through this House – have there even been 3 MPs simultaneously from the same family of SC community? I also ask, tell me if there ever were 3 MPs simultaneously from the same family belonging to the ST community…There is a vast difference between their words and actions,” he said.

PM Modi also emphasised on the fact that in a bid to make India a “developed nation”, the country has to be free of ‘tushtikaran‘ (appeasement).

“To make our country ‘Viksit Bharat’, we will have to be free of ‘tushtikaran’ (appeasement). We have chosen the path of ‘santushtikaran’ (satisfaction). We are walking the path of tushtikaran nahi santushtikaran,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi Demands Caste Census Using AI

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday raised his caste census pitch again saying that not a single corporate was owned by a Dalit or an OBC.

During his address in the Parliament, Rahul Gandhi said, “We have done a caste census in Telangana and what we have found is shocking. Almost 90% of Telangana is either Dalit, Adivasi, or OBC. I am convinced that is the story across the country. I am convinced that the OBC population is not less than 50%.”

He was referring to a caste survey report released on Sunday, which said backward classes constituted up to 56.33% of the Telangana population. According to the report, Scheduled Castes (SC) account for 17.43% of the total population while Scheduled Tribes (ST) are 10.45% in the state. There are 15.79% Other Castes (OC) in Telangana, reported.

Rahul Gandhi also pitched for the use of artificial intelligence in caste census. “Imagine the power of AI when we apply it to the caste census. Imagine what we will do with AI and what we will do with the social revolution in this country when we start to apply AI to the data that we get from the caste census,” he said.
