Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has come to the defense of her son, Rahul Gandhi, following criticism for his absence during the Lok Sabha debate on the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025. The bill, which was passed after a heated 12-hour discussion, has drawn sharp opposition from the INDIA bloc, including Congress, for allegedly being divisive and unconstitutional.
Addressing the CPP general body meeting, Sonia Gandhi expressed concerns over the government’s alleged suppression of opposition voices. “It is a matter of grave concern to our democracy that the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha is not permitted to speak. Similarly, time and again, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Khargeji, is also not allowed to say what he wants to say and indeed must say,” she remarked.
Sonia Gandhi also criticized the bill, calling it a “brazen assault on the Constitution” and part of the BJP’s strategy to maintain societal polarization. She reaffirmed Congress’s opposition to the legislation, stating, “Our party’s position is clear. We will stick to our stand in the Rajya Sabha as well.”
The Waqf Amendment Bill, which aims to improve the administration and management of Waqf properties, has sparked controversy, with opposition leaders accusing the government of targeting minorities. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the bill, arguing that it would bring transparency and benefit poor Muslims.
Rahul Gandhi, who faced backlash for skipping the debate, has yet to comment publicly on the matter. Meanwhile, Congress MPs have vowed to continue their fight against the bill in the Rajya Sabha, demanding thorough discussions and amendments.
