Supreme Court Judges Visit Relief Camps in Manipur to Assess Humanitarian Crisis

A delegation of six Supreme Court judges, led by Justice B.R. Gavai, visited relief camps in Manipur on March 22, 2025, to evaluate the ongoing humanitarian challenges faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs). The visit, coordinated by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), aimed to strengthen legal and humanitarian aid efforts in the violence-hit state.

Purpose of the Visit

The judges, including Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, M.M. Sundresh, K.V. Viswanathan, and N. Kotiswar Singh, toured relief camps in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Ukhrul districts. They interacted with displaced families, assessed their living conditions, and oversaw the distribution of essential relief materials. Justice Gavai also virtually inaugurated legal aid clinics and medical camps to provide immediate support to affected communities.

Background of the Crisis

The ethnic violence in Manipur, which erupted on May 3, 2023, during a protest against granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Meitei community, has claimed over 250 lives and displaced more than 50,000 people. Despite rehabilitation efforts, thousands remain in relief camps, grappling with legal, medical, and financial challenges.

Initiatives Undertaken

NALSA has established 273 special legal aid clinics in relief camps to assist IDPs in accessing government welfare programs, recovering lost documents, and obtaining medical aid. A team of 25 specialized doctors from Chennai conducted health check-ups and provided essential medicines to displaced families. These services will continue for an additional six days to ensure sustained support.

Significance of the Visit

The Supreme Court’s involvement underscores the urgent need for legal and humanitarian assistance in Manipur. The delegation’s efforts aim to bridge the gap between legal rights and accessibility, ensuring that displaced persons receive the resources they need to rebuild their lives with dignity.

This visit highlights the judiciary’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable communities and fostering hope amidst adversity. Stay tuned for further updates on relief and rehabilitation efforts in Manipur.
