In a groundbreaking achievement for Tripura’s healthcare sector, doctors at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GB Pant Hospital have successfully performed the state’s first complex spinal deformity correction surgery on an 11-year-old child.
🔴 Key Highlights:
- The patient, Rupam Bhowmik, was suffering from severe angular kyphotic deformity due to healed spinal tuberculosis (Pott’s Spine).
- The seven-hour-long surgery was conducted on June 2, after the child was admitted on March 28.
- A team of neurosurgeons performed a Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomy (PSO)—a highly demanding procedure used to correct severe spinal angulation while preserving spinal cord function.
- The surgery was conducted free of cost, with support from the hospital administration and Rogi Kalyan Samiti.
- The patient is now recovering well, marking a historic moment for Tripura’s medical sector.
📢 Expert’s Statement:
“The child had developed a knuckle deformity of the spine, resulting in a forward-stooped posture and significant discomfort. Left untreated, such deformities can lead to disability and neurological compromise,” said Prof. Dr. Sanjeev Debbarma, HoD of Pediatrics.
⚠️ Strategic Impact:
- Tripura’s medical capabilities have reached new heights, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment outside the state.
- The success of this surgery paves the way for advanced neurosurgical procedures, benefiting future patients with complex spinal conditions.
