Agartala, April 7, 2025 – Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has raised concerns about the prevalence of child marriage in the state, emphasizing that it affects all communities regardless of religion or social background. Speaking at a state-level seminar on child rights, the CM called for collective efforts to eradicate the practice, which continues to hinder the progress and well-being of children.
The Chief Minister highlighted that child marriage not only violates fundamental rights but also perpetuates cycles of poverty, illiteracy, and gender inequality. He urged local authorities, NGOs, and community leaders to work together to raise awareness and enforce the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
Tripura has one of the highest rates of child marriage in India, with recent data showing that over 30% of women aged 20-24 were married before the legal age of 18. The state government has launched several initiatives, including educational campaigns and financial incentives, to combat the issue. However, challenges such as deeply rooted social norms and economic pressures continue to pose significant barriers.
The seminar concluded with a pledge to intensify efforts to protect children and ensure their right to education and a safe childhood. The CM’s remarks have sparked discussions across the state, with stakeholders reaffirming their commitment to ending child marriage.
