Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has confirmed his request to Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw for the introduction of a Vande Bharat train service between Guwahati and Agartala. The Chief Minister met with the railway minister in New Delhi to discuss the future rail development plans for the region.
During the meeting, CM Saha emphasized the need for improved inter-city connectivity between Agartala and Guwahati through the Vande Bharat service. He also discussed the enhancement of local train connectivity between Dharmanagar and Sabroom, the laying of new tracks between Jirania and Bodhjungnagar industrial growth centre and Dharmanagar and Kailashar, and the introduction of a Kishan Rail service between Agartala and Guwahati.
The Indian Railways has been actively rolling out Vande Bharat trains since 2024. Recently, special Vande Bharat services were operated between New Delhi and Varanasi to accommodate the influx of devotees attending the Maha Kumbh Mela. Additionally, a new Vande Bharat train equipped with anti-freezing features is set to be introduced between Katra and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.
In January, the first 16-car Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset successfully completed trials on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, covering a distance of 540km. The distance between Agartala and Guwahati (via Silchar) is approximately 530km, making it a feasible route for the Vande Bharat sleeper rakes.
The Ministry of Railways has announced the production of nine more Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets scheduled between April and December this year. The northeastern region is hopeful that a Vande Bharat service will be included in the upcoming set of trains, specifically designed for longer journeys.
The proposed Vande Bharat service is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and boost economic growth in the region, providing faster and more efficient travel options for the residents of Tripura and Assam.
