Despite a historic performance by Rishabh Pant, India suffered a crushing five-wicket defeat against England in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds—setting an unwanted record in the process.
Pant’s Twin Centuries Overshadowed by Team Collapse
Pant became the first Indian to score centuries in both innings of a Test in England, with knocks of 134 and 118. His fearless counter-attacking style once again lit up the SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) circuit, where he now has six Test hundreds. However, his brilliance couldn’t prevent India from becoming the first team in Test history to lose a match despite scoring five centuries across two innings.
India’s Record-Breaking Collapse
India posted 471 in the first innings, powered by centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), Shubman Gill (147), and Pant (134). But a dramatic collapse saw them lose 7 wickets for just 41 runs, setting the record for the lowest Test total with three centurions. In the second innings, KL Rahul (137) and Pant (118) added two more tons, but England chased down a target of 371 with ease, thanks to Ben Stokes’ unbeaten 144.
A Bitter Milestone
Pant now joins a rare list of Indian batters—like Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli—who have scored centuries in both innings of a Test and still ended up on the losing side. His efforts, though individually remarkable, highlight India’s ongoing struggle to convert standout performances into team victories abroad.
