U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup: India seal victory in just 17 balls after Vaishnavi Sharma’s fiery fifer studded with hat-trick bulldoze opponent to 31

Vaishnavi Sharma etched her name in the history of the Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup by becoming the first Indian bowler to claim a hat-trick in the tournament. Vaishnavi Sharma’s stunning feat came during her debut match on Tuesday, January 21, in the U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup clash against Malaysia at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur.

Not only did she clock the hat-trick, but she also delivered a stellar performance, securing a five-wicket haul in the same game to help India bulldoze Malaysia by 10 wickets. She ended up clocking an impressive bowling figures of 4-1-5-5 to prove her bowling prowess.

Vaishnavi’s massive feat places her alongside South Africa’s Madison Landsman, who holds the record of being the first bowler to claim a hat-trick in the history of the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. Landsman achieved this feat during the group stage match against Scotland in 2023, finishing with impressive figures of 4/12. Vaishnavi Sharma, brought into the playing XI in place of Sonam Yadav, played a pivotal role in restricting Malaysia to a paltry 31 runs in 14.3 overs.

She made an immediate impact, dismissing Nur Dania Syuhada and Nuriman Hiyadah early in her spell. The highlight of her performance was undoubtedly the hat-trick, achieved by consecutively dismissing Nur Ain Binti Roslan, Nur Isma Dania, and Siti Nazwah.

Vaishnavi received excellent support from fellow left-arm spinner Aayushi Shukla, who contributed with figures of 3.3-1-8-3. Joshitha VJ, who had earlier been awarded Player of the Match against the West Indies, also made a significant contribution by claiming the wicket of opening batter Nuni Farini Safry.

Riding on Vaishnavi’s exceptional bowling performance, India secured a dominant 10-wicket victory over Malaysia. Malaysia, restricted to a mere 31 runs in 14.3 overs, faced a daunting chase. However, India’s openers, Gongadi Trisha and G Kamalini, made light work of the target, reaching the score in just 2.5 overs.

Trisha, who had a modest outing against the West Indies, showcased her aggressive batting style, scoring an unbeaten 27 off 12 balls with five boundaries. Kamalini, who recently fetched a hefty price of 1.60 crores at the WPL 2025 auction by the Mumbai Indians, remained unbeaten on four runs. The emphatic victory propelled India to the top of Group A in the points table with four points and an impressive net run rate of +9.148.

“This was a dream debut to get a hat-trick and five-wicket haul. My journey has had its ups and downs. I look up to Radha Yadav (India senior left-arm spinner) and Ravindra Jadeja. I had visualised how to get wickets here last night,” Vaishnavi said in the post-match presentation.
