In a major development, Tripura is set to host the Food Corporation of India (FCI) Zonal Office, which will oversee FCI operations across the North East region.
Union Minister for Food, Consumer Affairs, and New and Renewable Energy, Prahlad Joshi, approved the proposal and directed the Tripura government to complete preliminary procedures, including land identification, acquisition, and preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) for the ambitious project.
The approval was granted during a state-level review meeting chaired by the Union Minister on Saturday evening in Agartala, as part of his two-day visit to the state, a senior official informed EastMojo.
The meeting, held at the Civil Secretariat, was attended by Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, Power Minister Ratanlal Nath, Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Chief Secretary JK Sinha, and senior officials from the central ministry.
“The state government will allocate the necessary land for the regional office, and a project proposal will be sent to the central ministry for final approval,” the official stated.
According to a press release from the Information and Cultural Affairs Department of Tripura, Minister Prahlad Joshi appreciated the developmental work being undertaken in the state and expressed satisfaction with the successful implementation of various central and state schemes.
The Minister emphasized the central government’s commitment to fostering growth in the northeastern region and assured that issues raised by the state government would be addressed by the concerned authorities.
Chief Minister Manik Saha, in his speech, attributed the state’s progress to the Prime Minister’s “Act East Policy.” He highlighted how this policy has accelerated development across priority sectors in the northeastern region.
Referring to the recently concluded 72nd plenary session of the North East Council, the Chief Minister said, “During discussions, we learned how Tripura has advanced significantly in sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and horticulture, leading to a rise in the per capita income of the population. I would also like to thank Union Home Minister Amit Shah for personally visiting remote areas of the state and interacting with beneficiaries of various welfare schemes.”
The establishment of the FCI Zonal Office is expected to streamline operations and further bolster development in the northeastern states, aligning with the central government’s vision for the region.
