As India gears up for the highly anticipated first ODI against England, all eyes will be on Virat Kohli, who is on the cusp of breaking another monumental record held by cricket icon, Sachin Tendulkar.
The match, set to take place at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on 6 February, promises to be a thrilling encounter in the three-match series.
Kohli on the cusp of breaking Tendulkar’s record
Kohli, one of the modern-day greats of the game, is poised to surpass Tendulkar on a prestigious list. The legendary Tendulkar, often referred to as the ‘God of Cricket,’ has accumulated 3990 runs in 90 international innings against England. Kohli, however, is only 12 runs away from overtaking that tally, having scored 3979 runs across 107 innings in all formats against the English.
With just 12 runs needed to go past Tendulkar, Kohli will look to achieve this historic feat in the first ODI on Thursday.
In addition to his quest to surpass Tendulkar’s runs tally, Kohli also has another significant achievement within his sights. The Indian batter currently has eight centuries and 23 fifties against England in international cricket. With just one more century, Kohli will break Tendulkar’s record for the most fifty-plus scores by an Indian against England. Moreover, if Kohli registers even one more half-century in this series, he will become the player with the most fifties against England, further solidifying his place in cricket history.
In 2023, Kohli surpassed Tendulkar’s record of most ODI centuries after he reached his ton in the Cricket World Cup match against New Zealand. Kohli achieved this feat in front of Tendulkar at the latter’s home ground in Mumbai.
As India’s ODI campaign against England begins, Kohli’s pursuit of these records will add an extra layer of excitement for fans and players alike. With a strong squad led by captain Rohit Sharma, and the addition of in-form young players like Shubman Gill, the series promises to be a competitive one.
India’s squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill (vc), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja
