WhatsApp may soon introduce view once voice messages which will disappear after receiver listens to them

WhatsApp is working on a variety of new features to enhance users’ experience on the platform. The Meta-owned app has already announced new updates such as channels and a multiple-accounts feature.

Now, according to Wabetainfo, WhatsApp is planning to introduce a view once voice messages feature that will disappear after the recipient listens to them. This feature will be similar to WhatsApp’s existing “View Once” feature for photos and videos.

According to the report, the introduction of the “view once” mode for voice notes offers an additional layer of privacy to users. The feature will prevent voice notes from being stored, forwarded, or exported. Currently, this feature is exclusively accessible to a limited number of Android and iOS users who are using the beta version of the app. Users can enable this feature by installing the latest WhatsApp beta for Android, version 2.23.22.4, through the Google Play Store, or the WhatsApp beta for iOS, version 23.21.1.73, via the TestFlight app.

Once installed the feature can be activated by tapping a small “1” icon that appears to the right of the voice note waveform during recording of WhatsApp audio. “After sending the voice note with the view once mode enabled, you won’t be able to listen to it and the recipient can no longer listen to the voice note after dismissing it,” reveals WABetaInfo.

Providing further details on this feature, the report also includes a screenshot. The screenshot reveals a new “view once” icon, denoted by a lock, which is accessible in the chat bar during the process of recording a voice note. When a user selects this icon, the voice note will be transmitted in view once mode, preventing the recipient from exporting, forwarding, saving, or recording it.

Once the voice note is sent with view once mode activated, the sender and the recipient will be unable to listen to it again after it has been dismissed. This mode effectively reduces the risk of unauthorised access or subsequent listening, offering an additional layer of privacy for safeguarding sensitive and confidential information.

Notably, WhatsApp already has a similar “View Once” feature for photos and videos that it launched in 2021, so it is possible on the platform is planning to bring a similar feature for audio messages.

Once rolled out, this feature will offer users greater control and privacy when sharing voice notes. These voice notes cannot be exported, forwarded, or shared with others. This eliminates the risk of users’ personal or sensitive information falling into the wrong hands, adding an extra layer of privacy to their messages.

In addition, the report confirms that recipients will not be able to save or record voice notes sent in View Once mode. This gives users even more control over the content they share and helps to safeguard their privacy.
