A day after the wife of a constable with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and their two children were found dead at their house in Southwest Delhi’s Munirka, her family alleged the couple fought frequently and she was harassed by her in-laws for dowry.
The woman, Varsha Sharma, and her husband, Jagender, got married in 2017. Police suspect the woman allegedly killed her children before dying by suicide.
Speaking to The Indian Express, her father, Hemant Kumar Sharma, alleged, ‘My daughter used to call me every day and tell me how she used to have frequent quarrels with her husband and he used to harass and beat her…’
He said his daughter had gone to see her in-laws in Moradabad a month back where she was allegedly harassed for dowry. ‘… I got a call on Sunday that the door of my daughter’s house was locked, and no one was responding… Jagender was in Moradabad at the time,’ he added.
On October 8 around 10.30 am, a PCR call about the deaths was made by neighbours when they noticed the woman and her children hadn’t come out of their house despite several calls. Police had said the family lives in a four-storey residential building.
Police said they reached the home and found the door to a room on the fourth floor was locked from inside. Police called the Delhi Fire Services and the staffers broke the door.
‘On inspection of the premises, a woman and two children were found lying on the mattress. They were identified as Varsha, 27, and her two sons, aged four and two. They had sharp injuries on their wrists. Crime teams and forensic science teams were called to inspect the spot,’ Manoj C, DCP (Southwest), had said.
A senior police officer said a case of murder has been lodged apart from inquest proceedings being underway.
An officer said they are verifying the allegations against Jagender and his family and subsequent legal action will be taken as and when sufficient evidence surfaces. ‘We had not recovered any note from the room where the three bodies were found… Jagender was not present at the house during the time,’ said police.
