On the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a complete exchange of all prisoners of war with Russia, calling it a crucial step toward ending the ongoing conflict.
Speaking at a summit in Kyiv, Zelenskyy urged Russia to release all Ukrainian prisoners, affirming that Ukraine was prepared to do the same. “Russia must release Ukrainians. Ukraine is ready to exchange all for all, and this is a fair way to start,” he stated, as reported by AFP.
Zelenskyy also emphasized that 2024 should mark the beginning of a real and lasting peace for Ukraine. His remarks came as European Union leaders visited Kyiv in a show of solidarity, reaffirming their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
*Three Years of Conflict and Resistance*
Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy took to social media to reflect on Ukraine’s resilience over the past three years. “Three years of resistance. Three years of gratitude. Three years of absolute heroism of Ukrainians. I am proud of Ukraine! I thank everyone who defends and supports it. Everyone who works for Ukraine. And may the memory of all those who gave their lives for our state and people be eternal,” he wrote in a heartfelt post.
The war began on February 24, 2022, when Russia launched what it described as a “special military operation,” citing concerns over Kyiv’s aspirations to join NATO. The invasion led to a devastating war, reshaping global geopolitics and forcing millions to flee their homes.
While Russian President Vladimir Putin initially aimed for a swift victory, Ukraine’s determined resistance, bolstered by Western military aid, prevented Moscow from achieving its objectives quickly. However, after three years of intense fighting, Russian forces have gradually expanded their control, now occupying nearly 20 per cent of Ukrainian territory. The conflict has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties on both sides.
Zelenskyy’s proposal for a complete prisoner swap represents a bold move towards achieving peace and underscores his commitment to resolving the conflict that has caused immense suffering and disruption in Ukraine.
