Manipur Police Fire Tear Gas During Imphal Protest Over Civilian Killings

Tensions in Imphal Escalete

Law enforcement personnel in Imphal deployed tear gas shells on a Sunday afternoon to manage a volatile situation. Hundreds of demonstrators had gathered to voice their grievances and demand accountability. The situation grew increasingly tense as the crowd attempted to push forward during the demonstration.

Demands for Justice

The gathering was organized to seek justice for six slain Liangmai Naga civilians. In addition to these specific victims, the demonstrators sought accountability for other indigenous people who have lost their lives since the outbreak of the regional ethnic conflict in 2023.

March Towards the Secretariat

The protest intensified when participants tried to march directly toward the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Imphal. Security forces established barriers to block the advancing procession, leading to a physical confrontation between the participants and law enforcement officers.

Police Response

To control the large and agitated crowd, police officers resorted to firing tear gas shells. The intervention aimed to disperse the protesters and prevent the march from reaching the restricted government zone, halting the immediate escalation of the standoff.

Ongoing Regional Concerns

Sunday’s demonstration highlights the persistent unrest and community grievances stemming from the violent ethnic clashes that began in 2023. Families and community members continue to call for official responses and justice for the indigenous lives lost during the ongoing regional crisis.
