Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has raised concerns about potential law-and-order issues surrounding the state’s railway expansion projects. Speaking in the Assembly, Sangma emphasized the importance of addressing public sentiment and stakeholder concerns before moving forward with the proposed railway connectivity initiatives.
The railway projects aim to connect key locations such as Byrnihat, Shillong, and Jowai, promising significant economic benefits for Meghalaya’s farmers, entrepreneurs, and agricultural sector. However, opposition from local groups, including the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), has stalled progress due to fears of unchecked immigration and demographic changes.
Sangma assured the Assembly that the government would prioritize comprehensive discussions with political parties and stakeholders to build consensus. He acknowledged the divergent views on the project and stressed the need for a collaborative approach to address concerns about population influx.
As Meghalaya remains one of the few states without extensive railway connectivity, the outcome of these discussions will play a crucial role in shaping the state’s infrastructure development and addressing public apprehensions.
