Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has revealed that 70 individuals have been convicted in 52 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act over the past three years. Speaking in the Assembly on April 1, 2025, CM Saha emphasized his government’s zero-tolerance policy against drug-related offenses and highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts to combat the drug menace.
According to the Chief Minister, the convictions include 19 individuals in 13 cases in 2022, 20 individuals in 16 cases in 2023, and 26 individuals in 2024. Additionally, five individuals were convicted in early 2025. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to adopt stringent measures to curb drug trafficking and misuse.
CM Saha also detailed the significant seizures made during this period, including 1.54 lakh kilograms of ganja, 5.82 lakh bottles of banned cough syrup, and 25.62 lakh yaba tablets. He noted that drugs such as heroin and methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as yaba, are being smuggled into Tripura from Myanmar via Mizoram and Assam, while ganja is being trafficked out of the state.
The Chief Minister further informed the Assembly about the state’s efforts to rehabilitate drug users. As of January 2025, 5,520 injecting drug users have received treatment through Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) centers, with 612 individuals successfully completing the program and reintegrating into society.
Tripura’s government continues to prioritize awareness campaigns and collaborative efforts with NGOs, educational institutions, and other organizations to combat drug abuse and its associated challenges.
