In a significant boost to infrastructure development in the Northeast, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the construction of a 121-km-long Guwahati Ring Road, including a major 3-km bridge over the Brahmaputra River. The project, with an estimated cost of ₹7,000 crore, aims to enhance regional connectivity and ease traffic congestion in Guwahati and its surrounding areas.
The project will be executed under the Build-Operate-Toll (BOT) model, with a concession period of 30 years, including a four-year construction phase. The Assam government will contribute ₹1,270 crore, covering 50% of the land acquisition cost and providing exemptions on royalties and state GST. The initiative is part of the central government’s Vision 2047, which focuses on developing high-speed corridors and world-class infrastructure.
The Guwahati Ring Road project comprises three key components:
- A 56-km four-lane access-controlled Northern Guwahati Bypass.
- Widening of an existing 8-km bypass on NH-27 from four lanes to six lanes.
- Upgrading a 58-km bypass on NH-27 to improve traffic flow.
The highlight of the project is the Brahmaputra bridge, which will significantly improve mobility across the region. Once completed, the Ring Road will serve as a critical bypass for long-distance traffic from West Bengal and Bihar to Silchar, Nagaland, and Tripura, reducing congestion in Guwahati city. It will also provide seamless connectivity to major towns such as Siliguri, Shillong, Jorhat, Tezpur, and Barpeta.
This ambitious project is expected to transform the Northeast’s infrastructure landscape, fostering economic growth and regional integration. Stay tuned for updates on this landmark development.
