The Assam government recently honored distinguished individuals and organizations with the state’s highest civilian awards—Assam Baibhav, Assam Saurav, and Assam Gaurav—at a grand ceremony held at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati. The awards recognize outstanding contributions across diverse fields, including defense, science, art, sports, social work, and environmental conservation.
The prestigious Assam Baibhav Award, the highest civilian honor, was conferred upon Lt Gen (Retd) Rana Pratap Kalita for his exceptional service to the nation in the field of defense. Kalita, who served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command, has played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s security forces.
The Assam Saurav Award, the second-highest civilian honor, was presented to six individuals, including Subramanian Ramadorai, former CEO and MD of Tata Consultancy Services, for his contributions to the IT industry and skill development. Other recipients included Dr. Bappi Paul and Dr. Purabi Saikia for their work in environmental science, Dwipen Baruah for his achievements in music, Hemanta Dutta for his contributions to mobile theater, and cricketer Uma Chetry for her excellence in sports.
The Assam Gaurav Award, the third-highest civilian honor, was conferred upon 13 individuals and three organizations for their remarkable efforts in fields such as wildlife conservation, handicrafts, agriculture, and eco-tourism. Notable recipients included Phuleswari Dutta for protecting endangered vultures, Meenakshi Das for her solo motorbiking achievements, and the NGO Hathibondhu for mitigating human-elephant conflicts.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed pride in the grassroots-level achievers, stating, “These exemplary individuals and organizations have made Assam a better place through their dedication and contributions. The state is proud of their efforts.”
