Google is reportedly in discussions with Foxconn and Dixon Technologies to expand Pixel smartphone production in India, as the company seeks to mitigate the impact of new US tariffs on imports from Vietnam and China.
Strategic Shift in Manufacturing
According to sources, Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc. has initiated talks with its Indian manufacturing partners to scale up Pixel production in the country. The move comes as the US government imposes higher import duties, with Vietnam facing 46% tariffs and China 145% tariffs, compared to India’s 26% rate.
Local Sourcing and Expansion Plans
Google is reportedly urging its partners to source key components locally, including fingerprint scanners, batteries, and chargers, to reduce reliance on imports. Currently, 45,000 Pixel smartphones are manufactured in India each month, primarily for domestic sales. However, the company is now considering exporting India-made Pixel devices to the US, following Apple’s strategy.
Impact on India’s Tech Industry
This expansion aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative, strengthening its position as a global electronics manufacturing hub. Experts believe that Google’s move could boost local employment and enhance India’s role in the global supply chain.
