In a decisive move to tackle urban congestion, the Tripura government has announced a ban on outstation auto-rickshaws from operating within Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits. Simultaneously, all local autos will now be required to adopt a distinct pink color scheme for easy identification and regulation.
🚦 New Traffic Norms to Streamline Urban Mobility
Transport Minister Sushanta Choudhury unveiled the measures following a high-level meeting with traffic officials, auto syndicate leaders, and law enforcement. The decision aims to curb unauthorized entry, reduce disputes, and enhance commuter safety.
“Autos from outside subdivisions often lack valid permits and create friction with local drivers. This step will help restore order and reduce congestion,” said Choudhury.
🎨 Pink Autos for Agartala: One-Month Compliance Window
All autos registered within Agartala must be painted pink within a month, while outstation autos will retain their original colors. Entry into the city will only be permitted for emergency purposes, such as airport transfers or hospital visits, with valid documentation.
🛑 Tighter Surveillance and SOP Implementation
To enforce the new rules:
- 13 naka points will monitor unauthorized entries
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) will be issued by the SP Traffic
- Schools will be notified to prevent private vehicles without commercial licenses from ferrying students
📜 Legal Backing and Broader Urban Policy
The move aligns with Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and complements the state’s earlier decision to ban new three-wheeler registrations in AMC areas from July 10, 2024, to promote sustainable urban mobility.
