BNP’s Tarique Rahman Urges Muhammad Yunus to Step Up Diplomatic Push for Rohingya Repatriation

On the occasion of World Refugee Day, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called on interim government chief Muhammad Yunus to intensify diplomatic efforts for the safe, dignified, and voluntary repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Rahman highlighted the growing humanitarian burden on Bangladesh, which currently hosts over 1.4 million Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar—the world’s largest refugee settlement.

“This crisis remains one of the world’s gravest, and the burden is growing to levels that are dangerously unsustainable,” Rahman stated.

🛂 A Renewed Call for Global Action

Rahman urged the interim government to mount sustained pressure on Myanmar and engage the international community to ensure accountability and long-term solutions.

“Let us renew our commitment towards implementing and adhering to peaceful and just systems that ensure that no refugee is left behind when returning home,” he added.

📍 Background: The Rohingya Crisis

Since August 2017, over 750,000 Rohingyas fled Myanmar’s Rakhine State following a brutal military crackdown. Denied citizenship and basic rights, the Rohingya remain one of the most persecuted minorities globally, according to the UNHCR.

🔍 Political Context

Rahman’s appeal comes amid heightened scrutiny of Bangladesh’s refugee policy and growing domestic pressure to resolve the crisis. The BNP has consistently criticized the government’s handling of the issue, calling for stronger international alliances and regional diplomacy.
