Two-Time Olympic Medallist Lalit Upadhyay Announces Retirement from International Hockey

Indian hockey stalwart Lalit Kumar Upadhyay has officially retired from international hockey, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that spanned over a decade and included two Olympic bronze medals. The 31-year-old forward made the announcement on Olympic Day, shortly after India’s 4-3 win over Belgium in their final FIH Pro League 2024–25 match.

“It’s a tough moment, but one every athlete must face one day. It has been the greatest honour and pride of my life to represent our country,” Upadhyay wrote on social media.

🏑 A Journey of Resilience and Glory

Hailing from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Upadhyay debuted for India in 2014 and went on to earn 183 international caps, scoring 67 goals. His career highlights include:

  • Bronze medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics
  • Gold medals at the 2016 & 2018 Asian Champions Trophy
  • Silver at the 2018 Champions Trophy and 2022 Commonwealth Games
  • Bronze at the 2017 World League Final

Despite a controversial setback in 2008 involving a sting operation, Upadhyay rebuilt his career with the support of mentors like Dhanraj Pillay and Paramanand Mishra, eventually becoming a key figure in India’s resurgence on the global stage.

👮 Life Beyond the Turf

Upadhyay currently serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Uttar Pradesh and will continue playing domestic hockey for UP Police. His retirement marks the end of an era for Indian hockey, but his legacy as a fighter, leader, and role model will continue to inspire future generations.
