Anupam Mittal Reacts to India’s Got Latent Controversy: Calls Out Big Tech as the Real Culprits

Shaadi.com founder and Shark Tank India judge Anupam Mittal has weighed in on the controversy surrounding comments made during comedian Samay Raina’s show, India’s Got Latent. In a LinkedIn post, Mittal expressed his views on the incident, highlighting the role of big tech firms in perpetuating such issues.

Mittal stated that Ranveer Allahbadia, Apoorva Mukhija, and Samay Raina are victims caught in an endless cycle of provocation for their relevance and survival. He emphasized that YouTube, along with other big tech companies, should be held accountable for the content they allow on their platforms.

“The real culprits are ‘Big-tech’ who take cover under digital intermediary laws that allow them to flout all responsibility and accountability. Imagine a newspaper or a TV channel publishing the type of content that these platforms carry with total impunity,” Mittal wrote.

He further clarified his stance on the issue, acknowledging that what happened on the show was “messy, crass, and undeniably wrong.” Mittal pointed out that India’s Got Latent was always about insults, vulgarity, irreverence, and shock, and that the show’s format inherently pushed boundaries.

“India’s Got Latent wasn’t some Satyamev Jayate ka lost episode; it was always about insults, vulgarity, irreverence, and shock. So, when the host and guests cross the line, can we get scandalized? That’s literally the algorithmic jackpot from their perspective,” he wrote.

Mittal criticized social media platforms’ algorithms for promoting obscenity and encouraging creators to chase virality. He noted that while Ranveer and Apoorva have apologized for their comments, the focus should shift to addressing the larger issue of big tech’s role in such controversies.

“Ranveer and Apoorva messed up, real bad, and apologized. Shouldn’t we move our attention to the bigger issue?” he asked.

Despite the apologies from Samay Raina, Apoorva Mukhija, and Ranveer Allahbadia, several FIRs have been registered against them and other individuals related to the show.
