In a major boost to Pakistan’s air combat capabilities, China has agreed to supply 40 J-35 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets, marking its first international sale of the advanced aircraft. The deal, confirmed by Pakistan’s government via social media, also includes KJ-500 AEW&C aircraft and HQ-19 missile defence systems, signaling a deepening of strategic ties between the two nations.
✈️ What Is the J-35 Stealth Fighter?
Developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, the J-35 is a twin-engine, fifth-generation stealth fighter designed for carrier-based and land-based operations. It features:
- Stealth-enhancing design with internal weapons bays
- AESA radar and network-centric warfare capabilities
- A design evolution from the FC-31 prototype, with improved avionics and reduced radar signature
The version being supplied to Pakistan is believed to be the FC-31 export variant, a slightly toned-down model compared to the one used by China’s military.
🛡️ Strategic Implications for South Asia
With this acquisition, Pakistan joins a select group of nations operating fifth-generation stealth fighters, potentially narrowing India’s long-held air superiority in the region. Indian Air Force veterans have expressed concern, noting that India’s indigenous AMCA stealth fighter is still a decade away from induction.
“Any version of the J-35 in Pakistani colours is going to raise concerns on our side,” said Group Captain (Retd.) Ajay Ahlawat.
🧪 Training and Timeline
Reports indicate that Pakistani pilots have been training in China for over six months in preparation for the J-35’s induction. Deliveries are expected to begin by December 2025, with full operational capability projected within two years.
