Dale Steyn Names Top 5 Current ODI Bowlers, Omits Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc

Former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn has revealed his top five fast bowlers in One Day Internationals (ODIs) from international cricket teams, excluding Australia’s renowned pace trio—Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood.

Dale Steyn, who retired from all formats in 2021, remains the record holder for the most Test wickets for South Africa. The 41-year-old played 93 Tests and took 439 wickets, including 26 five-wicket hauls. In his ODI career, Steyn claimed 196 wickets in 125 matches, alongside 64 wickets from 47 T20I appearances.

In a video posted by ESPN Cricinfo on X (formerly Twitter), Dale Steyn named his top five ODI bowlers at present. Steyn selected Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kagiso Rabada, and Shaheen Shah Afridi as his top four bowlers. For the fifth spot, he couldn’t choose between Matt Henry and Marco Jansen.

“Shami, Bumrah, Rabada, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and then I can’t quite split Matt Henry and Marco Jansen. Those two guys, I feel like they just fly under the radar because they just do what is required to be done. And they can pick up wickets at any time,” Steyn stated.

Steyn praised Kagiso Rabada for his versatility, highlighting his effectiveness in all phases of the game. He also commended Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah for their exceptional performances. “And then you’ve got Rabada. The man doesn’t mind if he bowls with a new ball or if he bowls first change or if he bowls in the death. He has got control of the game, and he knows where the ball’s going to go, and he knows who he’s playing against,” Steyn added.

“And then obviously the two at the top, Shami and Bumrah. I mean, Shami’s had a phenomenal last few years, and Bumrah is who he is. They’re just, these guys are incredible. And the list can go on, but these are just five that right now are pretty impressive to me,” he concluded.
