Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president DK Shivakumar on Wednesday lauded Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the exceptional arrangements at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, which concluded with the final ‘snan’ on the occasion of Mahashivratri.
Shivakumar, who took a dip at the Triveni Sangam during the Kumbh Mela, opposed the politicisation of the religious congregation and emphasized that he was not one to find faults. He praised the UP government for the well-organized event and commended Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for his efforts.
Addressing his critics, Shivakumar stated, “I was born a Hindu and will die as a Hindu, but I respect all religions.” He further highlighted the inclusive philosophy of the Congress party, mentioning leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi. He also noted that Sonia Gandhi celebrates the Ugadi festival, demonstrating her deep connection to Indian culture.
Later on Wednesday, Shivakumar attended the Shivaratri program at the Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore, invited by Sadhguru. This drew a sharp response from the Congress, with All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary PV Mohan expressing disapproval on social media. Mohan stated that Shivakumar’s actions “damage the core” of the party and mislead party workers.
Despite the criticism, Shivakumar, who has been at the center of a power struggle and speculations regarding Congress leadership in Karnataka, denied any growing proximity to the BJP. He reaffirmed his commitment to the Congress, stating, “I was born a Congressman.”
Shivakumar also briefly shared the stage with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, further fueling speculations. However, he reiterated his loyalty to the Congress and dismissed any rumors of shifting allegiances.
