Hek Defends Demand for Smaller States Amid Northeast Political Tensions

Amid rising political tensions in the Northeast, Meghalaya BJP leader and cabinet minister A.L. Hek has voiced his support for the demand for smaller states in the region. Speaking to reporters in Shillong, Hek stated, “There is nothing wrong in asking for smaller states. Garo wants Garoland, and Khasis want Khasiland. Is there anything wrong with that? There is no problem at all.”

Hek’s remarks come against the backdrop of a heated exchange between former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. Singh accused Sangma of interfering in Manipur’s internal affairs, where ethnic divisions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have led to unrest and the imposition of President’s Rule.

The debate over smaller states has historical roots, with late Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma once advocating for dividing the Northeast along ethnic lines to promote peace. However, critics argue that such moves could threaten the region’s unity and stability.

Hek refrained from commenting on the ongoing tussle between Singh and Sangma, emphasizing that his focus remains on the interests of Meghalaya and its people. “I don’t have to say anything about the tussle between A or B. I am only for the interest of the people and the state of Meghalaya,” he said.

As discussions around smaller states gain momentum, the issue continues to spark diverse opinions across the political spectrum. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
