In a landmark decision, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the procurement of 26 Rafale-Marine (Rafale-M) fighter jets from France for the Indian Navy. The deal, valued at approximately Rs 64,000 crore, is set to bolster India’s maritime defense capabilities and enhance the operational strength of the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.
The Rafale-M jets, designed for carrier-based operations, will replace the aging MiG-29K fleet currently in service. The agreement includes 22 single-seater and four double-seater jets, along with advanced weapon systems, logistical support, and personnel training. Delivery of the aircraft is expected to commence five years after the contract is signed.
This acquisition marks a significant step in India’s defense strategy, aligning with its broader goal of modernizing naval air power. The deal also underscores the deepening defense partnership between India and France, which has seen collaborative projects in jet and helicopter engine development.
With this move, India aims to consolidate its superiority in the air and on the seas, ensuring robust maritime security in the region.
