The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed serious concerns over the deteriorating situation in Bangladesh, particularly the rise in violence against minorities, including Hindus, under the interim government led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus. The MEA has called on the Bangladeshi government to ensure the safety of Hindus, their properties, and religious institutions, emphasizing the importance of a stable and inclusive Bangladesh.
India’s Official Stance
During a media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “It is the responsibility of the interim government of Bangladesh to protect Hindus and other minorities as well as their properties and religious institutions.” He further highlighted India’s support for a peaceful and democratic Bangladesh, where issues are resolved through inclusive elections and dialogue.
Rising Violence Against Hindus
The situation in Bangladesh has worsened since the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, following massive student-led protests. Under the Yunus-led government, reports of targeted attacks on Hindus have surged. Temples and idols of Hindu deities have been vandalized, Hindus have been forcibly removed from jobs, and several have lost their lives. These incidents have raised alarm in India, which has repeatedly urged Bangladesh to take immediate action to protect its minority communities.
Extradition Request for Sheikh Hasina
Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi government has formally requested India’s extradition of Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after her government was toppled. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh has issued arrest warrants against Hasina and several former officials, accusing them of crimes against humanity and genocide during the July-August 2024 protests. Yunus has stated that Hasina will face trial, either in person or in absentia, for her alleged role in these incidents.
India has yet to officially respond to Bangladesh’s extradition request, adding a layer of complexity to the already strained diplomatic relations between the two nations.
India’s Role in Regional Stability
The Indian government continues to monitor the situation closely, reiterating its commitment to fostering a stable and inclusive Bangladesh. The MEA has also emphasized the need for thorough investigations into the violence and for bringing the perpetrators to justice.
As tensions rise, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that ensures the safety and rights of all communities in Bangladesh.
