India’s First Train with ATM Successfully Completes Trial Run

In a groundbreaking initiative, Indian Railways has successfully conducted the trial run of the country’s first train equipped with an Automated Teller Machine (ATM). The trial took place aboard the Panchavati Express, which operates daily between Manmad in Nashik and Mumbai, marking a significant step toward enhancing passenger convenience.

The ATM, installed in an air-conditioned coach, allows passengers to withdraw cash and access basic banking services while traveling. This innovative facility is a collaborative effort between the Bhusawal division of Indian Railways and the Bank of Maharashtra, introduced under the Innovative and Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme (INFRIS). The machine is housed in a secure cubicle, previously used as a makeshift pantry, and is monitored round-the-clock by CCTV to ensure safety.

During the trial run, the ATM functioned smoothly, except for minor network disruptions in the Igatpuri-Kasara stretch, known for its weak mobile reception due to tunnels and terrain. Railway officials have expressed optimism about the initiative, stating that if proven successful, the service may be extended to other major trains across the country.

Passengers have welcomed the move, praising the convenience of accessing banking services on the go. The ATM is accessible to all passengers through the connected vestibules between the train’s 22 coaches. Additionally, the facility will be available on the Mumbai-Hingoli Jan Shatabdi Express, which shares rakes with the Panchavati Express.

This pioneering effort by Indian Railways underscores its commitment to enhancing passenger experience and leveraging technology for innovative solutions. Stay tuned for updates as the service evolves and expands.
