India’s First Under-River Four-Lane Road Tunnel in Assam: A Landmark Project Set to Begin

India is set to achieve a significant milestone in infrastructure development with the construction of its first under-river four-lane road tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River in Assam. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this ambitious project has been prepared and technically appraised by the Project Appraisal and Technical Scrutiny Committee (PATSC) under the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

Project Overview

The proposed tunnel will connect Gohpur (on NH-15) and Numaligarh (on NH-715), significantly reducing travel time from 6.5 hours to just 30 minutes. By shortening the distance from 240 km to 34 km, the project aims to enhance connectivity and boost economic growth in the northeastern region. This twin-tube, unidirectional underwater tunnel will also play a strategic role in improving access to Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and other northeastern states.

Timeline and Construction

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the construction period for the project is estimated to be five years after the award of the contract. The project is expected to commence by the end of 2025, following the completion of pre-construction activities and tendering processes.

Strategic Importance

Apart from reducing travel time and improving regional connectivity, the tunnel is designed to facilitate the movement of defense personnel and bulk goods, particularly in areas prone to strategic challenges. The project underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure in the northeastern region, aligning with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan.

Economic and Environmental Considerations

The tunnel is expected to cost approximately ₹6,000 crore, with a portion of the funding allocated by the Ministry of Defence. The project incorporates advanced engineering techniques to address geotechnical challenges and ensure minimal environmental impact.

Stay tuned for updates as this landmark project progresses, marking a new chapter in India’s infrastructure development.
