BJP Cancels ‘Bihar Diwas’ Celebration in Assam’s Tinsukia Amid Protests

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to cancel its planned ‘Bihar Diwas’ celebration in Tinsukia, Assam, following widespread protests from regional political parties, community organizations, and the militant group United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) (ULFA-I). The event, originally scheduled for March 22, 2025, was intended to promote unity under the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative.

Opposition and Concerns

The decision comes after strong opposition from indigenous communities, including the Ahoms and Morans, as well as regional parties like Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad. Critics argued that celebrating Bihar Diwas in Assam undermines local culture and heritage. ULFA-I issued a warning, calling the event an “attack on the pride of indigenous people” and threatening consequences if it proceeded.

BJP’s Response

State BJP President Dilip Saikia announced the cancellation, emphasizing the party’s intent to avoid hurting local sentiments. Saikia clarified that while the event will not take place in Tinsukia, Bihar Diwas will be observed in other parts of Assam. He highlighted the importance of such celebrations in fostering national unity and mutual understanding.

Chief Minister’s Remarks

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the initiative, stating that similar events, like Assam Diwas, are celebrated in other states. Sarma criticized the opposition, warning that such hostility could harm Assam’s image and deter investment. He stressed the need for inclusivity and cultural exchange to strengthen ties across states.

Political Implications

The cancellation has sparked debates about regional identity and national integration. With Assam’s assembly elections approaching in 2026, the controversy underscores the delicate balance between cultural preservation and political strategy.
